The Audi A6 has always been aimed at drivers who spend plenty of time behind the wheel. It is the sort of car that makes sense on a long motorway journey, but it is equally at home as a daily car around Poole and the Dorset coast.
The used market is particularly interesting because the A6 now spans several different approaches to power and body style. At Poole Audi, our current selection includes A6 Avant models with petrol and diesel engines, A6 Saloon examples, plug-in hybrid e-hybrid versions and fully electric A6 e-tron models.
That makes choosing the right A6 less about finding a particular age or price and more about working out which version fits the way you drive.
A6 Avant or Saloon?
For many buyers, the first decision is body style.
The A6 Avant is the practical choice, with the estate body giving you a generous load area without making the car feel like a conventional large family estate. Audi's current A6 Avant has a boot capacity of up to 1,422 litres with the rear seats folded, while the latest versions combine that practicality with a very modern cabin and technology package.
The A6 Saloon has a more formal executive-car shape and will appeal to drivers who prefer the traditional three-box design. It remains a spacious, comfortable option for regular business and motorway use.

Petrol and diesel A6 models
The used A6 range gives you a chance to choose an engine based on your actual mileage rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
Our current stock includes 40 TFSI petrol models producing 204 PS, alongside 40 TDI quattro diesel versions with the same headline power output.
A petrol A6 can be a sensible fit for mixed driving, particularly if your annual mileage is relatively modest. A diesel remains attractive to drivers who regularly cover long distances, where its characteristics suit sustained motorway use.
The quattro versions add Audi's all-wheel-drive system, which can be useful if you regularly drive on wet or less predictable roads. It is not something everyone needs, but it is worth considering if traction is a priority.
Plug-in hybrid A6 models
The newer A6 range also introduces e-hybrid models, giving buyers another option between a conventional petrol or diesel car and a fully electric vehicle.
The A6 Saloon e-hybrid and A6 Avant e-hybrid use a plug-in hybrid system with 299 PS and quattro all-wheel drive. Audi quotes an electric-only range of up to 67-70 miles for the Saloon and up to 57-63 miles for the Avant, depending on specification and official test conditions.
That makes an e-hybrid particularly interesting if your everyday driving is largely within the electric range but you still want the reassurance of a petrol engine for longer journeys.
Of course, it works best when you can charge regularly. If you rarely have access to charging, a conventional A6 powertrain may be a more straightforward choice.
The A6 e-tron brings another option
The A6 name now also covers Audi's fully electric executive cars.
Our current used stock includes A6 Sportback e-tron and A6 Avant e-tron models, with the latter available in both S line e-tron performance and Sport e-tron forms.
The A6 Sportback e-tron is designed around aerodynamic efficiency, while Audi quotes up to 468 miles of electric range for the Sportback e-tron range, depending on derivative. It can also accept DC charging at up to 270kW.
For drivers ready to make the move to an EV, the A6 e-tron is therefore quite a different proposition from simply choosing a conventional A6 with a smaller engine.
A cabin built for long journeys
One of the A6's strengths is how well it suits spending several hours in the car.
The driving position is comfortable, the cabin is well insulated and the newer generation introduces a much more technology-focused dashboard. Current A6 Avant models feature an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus display and a 14.5-inch MMI touchscreen, with a separate 10.9-inch passenger display available on Vorsprung versions.
Used A6 models from previous generations have a different interior and technology package, so it is worth comparing the actual equipment fitted rather than assuming a newer-looking trim automatically has everything you want.
Which used A6 makes sense?
There is no single answer because the A6 is now such a broad family of cars.
If you cover high annual mileage and want conventional refuelling, a diesel A6 Avant quattro could be worth considering. If your driving is more mixed, a petrol A6 may be the simpler option.
For someone with regular access to charging, the e-hybrid introduces the ability to complete shorter trips using electric power while retaining petrol for longer journeys. And if you are ready to go fully electric, the A6 e-tron brings a different driving experience altogether.
The important part is matching the car to your routine rather than buying based solely on the badge, trim or headline power figure.
